Medical Terminology Online Workshop for Interpreters and Translators - English

Learning Medical Terminology can seem like a daunting task at first. It could, in fact, be like learning a whole other language. In reality, memorising all of the words in a medical dictionary may prove to be impossible.

Do not fear! There is a simple way to learn and understand Medical Terminology. Most words are simply a combination of different parts or elements. In this workshop, you will learn the common roots, prefixes, and suffixes of medical terminology and how to use this knowledge to help you navigate complicated medical language for your interpreting and translating assignments.

This workshop is designed for new interpreters and translators and experienced interpreters and translators looking to refresh their knowledge of medical terminology.

The workshop includes a Medical Terminology workbook, including a glossary that you can take home.

Dr Bee Yen Ooi (MBBS)

Dr Bee Yen Ooi graduated with a MBBS from Peking University Health Science Centre in 2007 and has successfully passed Medical Qualifying Exams in China, Malaysia and Australia. Dr Bee Yen is a registered Medical Doctor with Ministry of Health, Malaysia since 2009 and is eligible for registration as a medical practitioner in Australia. With more than 10 years of clinical experience she has a special interest in diagnostic radiology and teaching.

• The meaning of common prefixes, roots and suffixes

• The common medical terminology of body parts, signs and symptoms, disorders, medications and procedures.

Skills to:

• Navigate complicated medical language.

• Understand, remember and recall medical terminology efficiently.

A Certificate will be issued to attendees. Learners will be eligible to 20 points towards NAATI recertification (Section 1.3 or 1.4 of NAATI Recertification Professional Development Catalogue).
