NAATI and All Graduates have collaborated through Conversations: Interpreting and Translating to provide training and professional development to translators and interpreters and aspiring practitioners through a series of podcasts, panel discussions and webinars.
'ASK NAATI' Podcast Episodes
Every 3 months, a panel of NAATI managers will answer questions that Interpreters and Translators have sent through using this form. Questions will be picked at random and directed at the panel by a Facilitator. The session will be recorded and published on the NAATI YouTube channel as well as the "Conversations: Interpreting & Translating" YouTube, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast and Spotify Podcast channels.
All Graduates has been the major service provider of onsite and telephone interpreting services for Melbourne Health since 1994. Our latest project is the Melbourne Health Telehealth initiative in collaboration with the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
In 2018, Melbourne Health (Royal Melbourne Hospital [RMH]) expanded its use of video interpreting to facilitate telehealth consultations with multicultural patients. The initiative was supported under the Department of Health and Human Services – Language Services Innovation Grants program It followed research published in 2015 by Dr Thomas Schulz, Infectious Diseases Physician at RMH, which showed that patients from culturally and linguistically diverse communities preferred accessing interpreters via video conferencing rather than telephone, in situations when onsite interpreting was not possible.
Interpreting and Translating – School of Global, Urban and Social Studies
All Graduates and RMIT University have been working together since the mid 1990s. During this time RMIT University, Translating and Interpreting Discipline, School of Global Studies Social Science and Planning and All Graduates have collaborated in numerous university forums, research projects and interpreter and translator training sessions, including:
All Graduates has supported RMIT University’s Translating and Interpreting programs by providing industry experts, guest speakers who have delivered lectures and workshops for practicing interpreters/translators and students as well as providing sample high-technology tools and equipment for use by the RMIT Translating and Interpreting program in training translators and interpreters.
School of Humanities and Languages
In 2019, a team of UNSW researchers, with the support of industry partner organisations received an ARC (Australian Research Council) Linkage grant for the research project Access to justice in interpreted proceedings: the role of Judicial Officers. The research team includes UNSW researchers: Prof Ludmila Stern, Prof Sandra Hale, A/Prof Stephen Doherty and Ms Melanie Schwartz and Mr George Bisas as an Industry Partner from Multicultural NSW. The partner organisations represent interpreter bodies, interpreting service providers and bodies representing the judiciary.
This national study will be the first to investigate the Australian Judicial Officers’ (JOs) role in achieving effective communication during interpreted bilingual proceedings. It will examine whether JOs adhere to the Recommended National Standards (RNS) and compare their practices to those of international criminal courts and tribunals.
With the assistance of its Partner Organisations, the research team will observe interpreted criminal court proceedings in most jurisdictions. These will be complemented by interviews and focus groups with JOs, interpreters and lawyers to capture the broader perspectives of different stake holders. To increase the representativeness of the findings arising from the observations and interviews, the researchers will compile and analyse a large corpus of transcripts of interpreted proceedings and judgments.
The project’s practical outcomes will include strategic recommendations for enhanced communication strategies in interpreted proceedings – an area of growing courtroom demand that presents significant challenges.
FATIH KARAKAS, MSocSc(Trans&InterpSt), ALL GRADUATES, RMIT UNIVERSITY - MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
Fatih Karakas is the Trainer and Training & PD Coordinator at All Graduates. He is also a lecturer in the Translating and Interpreting Program at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University where he also completed his Masters in Translation and Interpreting. He teaches both at Vocational and Higher Education levels and has delivered training in other states across the country for RMIT University and AUSIT. He is particularly interested in teaching interpreting skills as well as ethics and professionalism with a focus on providing non-language specific training via online Learning Management Systems. Fatih is also a NAATI certified interpreter and translator (Turkish-English) specialising in legal and healthcare interpreting.
Dr. Alperhan Babacan holds Honours degrees in Law and Political Science, a PhD and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching in Learning. Dr Babacan is admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and High Court of Australia and has extensive experience in legal practice and legal education. In academia, Dr. Babacan has held various senior positions including as Chair of Criminology at Navitas, deputy head of School at Swinburne University and as Director of the Juris Doctor program at RMIT University. Dr Babacan has extensive experience in unit and course development, accreditation and review. He has published very widely in areas of law, criminology and teaching and learning in the higher education sector with a specific focus on the scholarship of learning in legal education.
NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA
Han Xu is a professional interpreter (Mandarin-English), holding certification/accreditation from NAATI and CATTI (China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters). She received systematic interpreting and translation training in an MA program at Sichuan University in China between 2011 and 2014. Since then, she has been practising as a conference interpreter, specialising in interpreting in business, diplomatic and educational settings. Han completed her PhD study at the University of New South Wales in early 2019. Her PhD research project looks into how interpreting services are used in legal interviews with a focus on lawyer-interpreter working relations and their impact on the effectiveness of interpreted legal interviews. Soon after Han finished her PhD study, she had worked as an assistant lecturer at Monash University teaching interpreting. Han is interested in conducting interdisciplinary studies to empirically investigate different aspects of interpreting activity, such as issues related to interpreter role, ethics, training and professionalism. Han is also on the AUSIT National Council with a view to contributing her efforts and knowledge to raise the professional status of translators and interpreters in Australia.
RMIT UNIVERSITY - MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
Dr Miranda Lai is a lecturer in interpreting and translating studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University). Her research interests include ethics for interpreters and translators, public service interpreting and translating, police interviewing in bilingual settings. She has delivered training in Australia and overseas, and she is the co-author of Ethics for Police Translators and Interpreters (2017).
LANGUAGE SOLUTIONS - SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Dr Uldis Ozolins is a well-known teacher, researcher and writer on Interpreting & Translation with an international reputation. He has taught at several Australian universities, most recently at Western Sydney University where he was head of the languages and I&T area for several years. Uldis has conducted numerous professional development and training seminars for various organisations including All Graduates; was one of the authors of the Code of Ethics for AUSIT, the national professional association for I&T in Australia; and has participated in the restructuring of the NAATI testing regime. With a background in social sciences and politics, he advises on language service policy and is keen to develop cultural and linguistic awareness among service providers and the wider community.
