Video Remote Interpreting: Challenges and Responsibilities

Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) has been around for years however, the current climate caused by the Coronavirus has meant that the T&I industry had to make the shift to VRI in order to keep participants safe but still provide essential language services for service providers and CALD clients. This rapid change resulted in practitioners, language service providers, clients and technology platforms adapting to this mode of delivery almost overnight leading to VRI now being used as the preferred remote interpreting alternative in almost all Community Interpreting settings as it provides visual cues in addition to the audio feed.

 VRI can be a cost effective, quick and easy way of providing interpreting services. However, it can be quite a challenging mode of delivery for practitioners due to technical issues and its complex and cognitively demanding nature. This interactive webinar will explore Video Remote Interpreting through the perspective of all participants and introduce the All Graduates dedicated Video Interpreting division that sets and follows strict protocols to ensure optimum quality of message transfer for clients while establishing the required work place standards for interpreters. The webinar will also look through the AUSIT “Recommended Protocols for VRI in Community Interpreting”, released in July 2020.

Fatih Karakas is the Trainer and PD Coordinator at All Graduates Interpreting and Translating Services. Fatih is a Turkish Certified Interpreter/Translator and has completed a Masters in Translating and Interpreting at RMIT University where he also works as a lecturer. His interests are interpreter and translator ethics, interpreter skills development and interpreting in healthcare settings.

Mikaela Robertson is the Video Interpreting Coordinator at All Graduates Interpreting and Translating Services. She joined the All Graduates team in 2017 and has spent the last 2 years overseeing the Video Interpreting aspect of All Graduates, ensuring that interpreters are trained in the various platforms being used and supported throughout the entire process. She also liaises with clients on a regular basis to ensure that their unique needs are being met and to ensure that each booking goes ahead successfully.
