Australia is one of the most multicultural societies in the world. Cross-cultural communication work context is an everyday experience for most of us, therefore, it is crucial for professionals to understand cultural competence concepts and acquire the knowledge and skills needed to improve communication with people from diverse backgrounds as well and ensure that service provision adopt and apply the principles of cultural competence. A special focus on the expectations to see Interpreters as cultural experts and the risks associated with it.


This 90-minute webinar will cover:

  • Principles of cultural competence

  • Continuum of cultural competency   

  • Knowledge and skills of a cultural competence professional

  • Effective communication with culturally diverse people

  • Multicultural policies and legislation

  • Costs of incompetence

Presented by: Marta Menendez

Marta was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and came to Australia in 1984. She graduated from Western Sydney University as an accredited Interpreter and Translator in 1999 and later completed a Master of Social Policy degree, the Diploma in Leadership and Management and the Cert IV in Training and Assessment. Marta is currently completing the second year of the Master in Interpreting and Translation course at WSU.

During her 27 years of experience of working in government and non-government organisations, Marta had the opportunity to develop and deliver cross-cultural communication training, cultural competence education and team management in the multicultural field.

Since 1999, Marta has worked as an Interpreter and Translator, and in 2003, she was engaged by the Western Sydney University as a Tutor to deliver various Interpreting and Translation subjects to local and international Spanish students. In 2017 she also provided professional services to Macquarie University.

Fatih Karakas is the Trainer and Training & PD Coordinator at All Graduates. He is also a lecturer in the Translating and Interpreting Program at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University where he also completed his Masters in Translation and Interpreting. He teaches both at Vocational and Higher Education levels and has delivered training in other states across the country for RMIT University and AUSIT. He is particularly interested in teaching interpreting skills as well as ethics and professionalism with a focus on providing non-language specific training via online Learning Management Systems. Fatih is also a NAATI certified interpreter and translator (Turkish-English) specialising in legal and healthcare interpreting. 


PD Logbook

All Graduates will issue a certificate of attendance where you join the full duration of the live broadcast. Participants will be eligible to 10 PD points towards recertification (Section 1.4 of NAATI Recertification PD Catalogue). Some webinars may attract PD points from multiple categories. Please choose the most appropriate category for your recertification.
