Ethics and Professionalism for Interpreters and Translators Course

This online course will concentrate on developing learners’ knowledge and application of the AUSIT Code of Ethics in their translating and interpreting assignments. Learners will gain knowledge of the ethical requirements for translators and interpreters in Australia.

Description

In Australia, NAATI certified translators and interpreters should comply with the AUSIT Code of Ethics as part of their ongoing certification. AUSIT (Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators) is the national professional association of translators and interpreters in Australia. 

This online course will concentrate on developing learners’ knowledge and application of the AUSIT Code of Ethics in their translating and interpreting assignments. Learners will gain knowledge of the ethical requirements for translators and interpreters in Australia.

What you will learn

Upon completion of this online course, learners should:

  • have a clear understanding of the meaning and implication of each ethical principle outlined in the AUSIT Code of Ethics;

  • be aware of a range of ethical issues specific to translators or interpreters;

  • know how to explain their ethical requirements to language service users to obtain optimal working conditions;

  • be able to cite code of ethics to justify their translation or interpreting choice when necessary;

  • be able to identify a potential ethical dilemma in a real-life situation, critically evaluate the outcome of their action and make ethically sensitive decisions.

  • be able to apply the Demand Control Schema to aid their ethical decision making

  • be able to apply skills to better prepare and plan for translation and interpreting assignments

This course is composed of video narrated presentations, quizzes and instructional videos to establish best practice when practitioners are met with ethical challenges in the translating and interpreting context.

 

Course Structure

The course comprises 7 lessons. Each lesson has a video narrated presentation, written content and related videos. For each lesson, learners should:

  1. Watch the video narrated presentation

  2. Read the written content (Quiz questions will cover both the presentation and written content)

  3. Watch all of the videos in the lesson 

  4. Move to the next module with the arrow on the top right hand of your screen

  5. Once you have watched and read all the content in the lesson you will be required to complete a quiz.

 

Assessments:

At the end of each lesson, you will be required to complete a short quiz.

 

Course Completion Timeframe:

The course must be completed within 6 months of enrolment.

 

PD Logbook:

A "Certificate of Completion" will be issued upon completion of the course which can be used for NAATI Recertification. Learners will be eligible for 20 PD points towards recertification (Ethics Sub-Category, Section 2.20 of NAATI Recertification PD Catalogue). 

 

Course Presenters: 

Dr Han Xu

Han Xu is a professional interpreter (Mandarin-English), holding certification/accreditation from NAATI and CATTI (China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters). She received systematic interpreting and translation training in an MA program at Sichuan University in China between 2011 and 2014. Since then, she has been practising as a conference interpreter, specialising in interpreting in business, diplomatic and educational settings. Han completed her PhD study at the University of New South Wales in early 2019. Her PhD research project looks into how interpreting services are used in legal interviews with a focus on lawyer-interpreter working relations and their impact on the effectiveness of interpreted legal interviews. Soon after Han finished her PhD study, she had worked as an assistant lecturer at Monash University teaching interpreting. Han is interested in conducting interdisciplinary studies to empirically investigate different aspects of interpreting activity, such as issues related to interpreter role, ethics, training and professionalism. Han is also on the AUSIT National Council with a view to contributing her efforts and knowledge to raise the professional status of translators and interpreters in Australia.

  

Fatih Karakas, MSocSc(Trans&InterpSt)

Fatih Karakas is the Trainer and Training & PD Coordinator at All Graduates. He is also a lecturer in the Translating and Interpreting Program at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University where he also completed his Masters in Translation and Interpreting. He teaches both at Vocational and Higher Education levels and has delivered training in other states across the country for RMIT University and AUSIT. He is particularly interested in teaching interpreting skills as well as ethics and professionalism with a focus on providing non-language specific training via online Learning Management Systems. Fatih is also a NAATI certified interpreter and translator (Turkish-English) specialising in legal and healthcare interpreting.  

  

 

Dr Robyn Dean

Robyn Dean, CI/CT, PhD, is currently on the faculty at the Rochester Institute of Technology as the lead instructor on their graduate degree in healthcare interpretation. Robyn’s scholarship in interpreting ethics is recognized internationally which has led to many presentations and projects around the world. Dean has been a certified interpreter for thirty years. Robyn Dean’s demand control schema has been the topic of numerous presentations, publications, and grant projects nationally and internationally. Her contribution to interpreter education was recognized in 2008 with the Mary Stotler Award, an award conferred every two years, conjointly, by the US’s Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the Conference of Interpreter Trainers.
